We provide tailored diabetes training for organisations working with older people living with diabetes. Delivered by our specialist team—including diabetes nurse educators and dietitians—the training covers essential topics such as:

  • Understanding diabetes and its types
  • Blood glucose monitoring, target ranges, and managing highs and lows
  • Lifestyle and nutrition management
  • Supporting residents with technology (insulin pumps, continuous glucose monitoring)
  • Practical considerations for older people living with diabetes
  • Resources and support available through NDSS and online

Please note: training does not include administering insulin. A separate program for disability support workers that covers insulin administration is currently being developed.

What training do you offer for Aged Care Support Workers? 

We currently offer tailored training to organisations who work with older people living with a diabetes.  This will be delivered by our diabetes specialist health professionals which include diabetes nurse educators and dietitians. 

Suggested training topics include:  

  • Introduction to diabetes
    • What is diabetes and the different types of diabetes
    • Blood glucose monitoring and target ranges
    • Hypo and hyperglycaemia
  • Management of diabetes
    • Overview of lifestyle management
    • Introduction to technology – insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitoring
    • Demonstration of blood glucose monitoring
    • Training on how to support and supervise someone administering their own insulin*
  • Working with the diabetes patient
    • Annual cycle of care to detect or prevent diabetes complications
    • Hypoglycaemia and impaired awareness
  • Nutrition and Diabetes
    • Nutrition guidelines for diabetes
    • The benefits of healthy eating for diabetes
    • Practical nutrition considerations of older people living with a diabetes
  • Resources
    • NDSS support
    • Virtual emergency support
    • Online resources   

*Please note that we cannot provide training on how to administer insulin. 

We are currently developing insulin administration training for disability support workers. Which will be part of a comprehensive diabetes training package for disability support workers.
